Palkhi Festival: Hundreds of kms on foot

Today almost entire Pune came to a standstill as thousands of pilgrims passed through the city on foot. I was caught up in the traffic jam for a long time but was amazed at the dedication it takes and the hardship of such a treacherous journey. Many people were very old. Faith can move mountains, this is proof!

Hi VS Varun,
The route isAlandi (Maharashtra) to Pandharpur (Maharashtra). It is 224 kms (driving distance), however, the walk is a bit longer because the arrangements for meals/ overnight camping are in different locations.
A lot of organizations provide free food. Many trucks follow the devotees in case of emergencies when a person cannot continue on foot. There are many 'palkis' just as there are many ganpatis during ganesha festival. The devotees carry ektaras, jhanj etc and sing bhajans all the way! It's very simple compared to the flasshy ganesha festival....
