What happend to a copy right of closed publisher

The progress publishers Moscow was a famous publisher for political books and children’s books. They had departments for foreign languages and they translated books from Russian to other languages. However, at the time of decline of former Soviet Union this publishing house also closed down. I want to know what happened to the copyrights of their works. Especially to the Malayalam translations. In Malayalam (kerlam) the distributor of their books was Prabhath Publishers, Thiruvananthapuram. Can they claim copy right over the books, they distributed for Progress Publishers??

If the Prabhath publications had baught the copy right in Malayalam language, and published the books then they getthe right.  They can protect their rights by any available means, irrespective of the fact that the original publshers has closed down their business.
