Suo moto FIR means that the police can file them and does not require a complaint to initiate action. In case of cognizable offenses, such FIR is filed.

Suo moto describes an act of authority taken without formal prompting from another party. In a recent judgment, it was held that suo moto FIR leads to less manipulation in criminal cases.
