Adoption in the Hindus is covered by the Hindu Adoptions Act and after the coming of this Act, all adoptions can be made in accordance with this Act. 

In recent years a new regulation which is called Adoption Regulations, 2017 was formed. According to this regulation “The Indian prospective adoptive parents irrespective of their religion, if interested to adopt an orphan or abandoned or surrendered child, shall apply for the same to Specialised Adoption Agencies through Child Adoption Resource Information and Guidance System by filling up the online application form.” According to this act, anyone can adopt a child irrespective of their religion; they have to be resident Indians. It does not restrict or limit the adoption of a child only for Hindus. This regulation provides equal rights to everybody who resides in India.

Child Adoption Regulatory Authority (CARA) in 2018 said that Individuals in a live-in relationship will once again be able to adopt children from and within India after the country’s nodal adoption agency decided to not bar applicants in a live-in relationship from adopting a child.
