Three ABVP and two NSUI candidates have approached the Delhi High Court against the Delhi University’s decision to disqualify them to contest the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections which are scheduled for September 4.
They were disqualified by the Delhi University for violation of code of conduct as they failed to comply with the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations. They were found spending excess money than the fixed amount of Rs 5,000, using cars and organising rallies for the election campaign, which was against the Committee’s recommendations.
Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s (ABVP) presidential candidate Rohit Chahal, along with Lalit Kumar, for the post of secretary and Ashok Khari, for Jt Secretary, through their Lawyer Ajay Digpaul have asked the court that they be allowed to contest the elections as the decision of the DU to disqualify them is arbitrary and unwarranted.
They have even sought a stay on the elections.
National Students Union of India (NSUI) candidates Umesh Tanwar and Deepak Negi also asked the High Court to direct DU to reconsider their nominations for the elections.
The two student bodies said they will continue with their decision to protest the "unwarranted" decision by the varsity authorities.
"The hasty decision should have been avoided as penalty and some other punishment have yielded results. Even if the authorities are ready to set a precedent, they should bring structural reforms in the student union polls," NSUI national secretary Anand Pandey said here.
The decision to disqualify three of the four ABVP nominees for the polls will lead to unfair elections which is violative of students Rights, Mr Ajay Digpaul said.
With the disqualification of six candidates, including three from ABVP and two from NSUI, the two rival student outfits are devoid of their presidential candidates.
All the five Petitions will come up for hearing tomorrow.
