Fuzzy logic for divorce
A husband says he cannot consummate the marriage because his wife has hair on her chest; she, in turn, calls him impotent; sometimes the most irrational charges are cooked up to make the case strong.
A snoring husband, a wife who visits her parents too frequently or another insulting her spouse with nasty words are some of the strange reasons couples cite for seeking divorce. In Bangalore’s family court, a similar case is being fought between a techie couple. While the wife has accused the husband of being impotent, the latter has said he cannot have s*x with his wife as she has too much hair on her chest.
The family court judge had given the couple a year for reconciliation before it passed orders on their divorce petition.
Akash and Sarita got married in May 2010. Trouble began within days when the couple went on honeymoon. The two did not consummate the marriage because Akash could not reconcile to the fact that his wife was ‘not feminine’ enough. She had heavy growth of hair on her chest.
Frequent fights
Regular fights ensued between the couple and Sarita left her in-laws’ house on August 29. Before leaving, she told her in-laws that Akash was not man enough to be married.
Akash served a divorce notice on her in November and the following month, a divorce application was filed in the family court.
The judge allowed a one-year waiting period. Meanwhile, Sarita filed a case of cruelty against Akash and her in-laws, who spent two days in jail.
During the mediation in March 2011, Sarita was willing to go back to her husband. But Akash and his family were not willing to welcome her. To complicate matters, Sarita had charged that Akash was impotent.
Family counsellor and founder of Children’s Rights Initiative For Shared Parenting (CRISP) Kumar Jahgirdar says there have been numerous cases where bizarre allegations have been made by spouses.
“There have been instances where a husband’s snoring problem has been made one of the reasons for seeking divorce. In another case, a husband was upset that his wife was not spiritual enough. During the recent recession, husbands who lost their jobs also became a big casualty of divorce petitions. Accusing the spouse of being impotent and not up to expectations in bed are also numerous. But in all these cases, they are not the only reason. Cruelty and dowry charges are also added to make the cases strong,” he said.
