Illegal to open a letter addressed on someone else's name?

A friend of mine has received a summons from a police station because his wife has filed a false complaint.

His parents live in India but my friend himself lives in the UK.  Similarly is the case with his wife.

The divorce proceedings is progressing in the UK but his wife and her family are behaving immaturely as they cannot accept the UK courts do not entertain false allegations without them providing evidence first before the complaint can be raised.

His wife is deliberately trying to involve his parents without having stayed with them by placing the complaint in India on his parent's home address.

Would I be right that legally any letters sent should not be accepted or opened by either of his parents as he does not live in India?  His wife currently sends correspondence letters via the solicitors in the UK and deliberately addressing the complaints in India so he cannot as for anything contributed by home in the divorce.

What is the legal stance of letters of being opened?

Its trifling act unless not send under register cover

So any post can be opened by anyone and not be penalised unless registered?

That does not make sense to take away someone's privacy away.
