I recently moved out of a rented apartment, and according to the agreement, I was supposed to receive the full amount of my security deposit back. However, the landlord is refusing to return the deposit, claiming that there were damages to the property that were not disclosed, but these damages were never mentioned when I moved in or at the time of my departure.
I’ve made multiple attempts to resolve this amicably by asking for a detailed breakdown of the damages, but the landlord has not provided any evidence or photographs. Now, the landlord is suggesting that they will deduct a portion of the deposit for repairs, but I’m unsure if this is valid or not.
I would appreciate it if someone could clarify:
What legal rights do I have regarding the return of my security deposit?
What steps should I take if the landlord refuses to return it?
Can I take legal action without first receiving a notice or explanation of the damages?
I would like to resolve this issue as smoothly as possible, but I’m unsure how to proceed. Any advice or guidance would be much appreciated!
