Loyalty & discipline

Jyanti Natarajan’s, by her protestations, may have provided some material for breaking the news, but she has revealed nothing earth-shaking. The fact of the matter is that the governance in our country is propelled by the misconceived notion of discipline expected of any public functionary being synonymous with the loyalty to the power centre. Our lament has always been the absence of strong leadership and the strong leader is one who can wantonly interfere (sans responsibility, of course) and command subservience   to his/her whims irrespective of the legality or its requirements. Any dissent is considered a blasphemy. This has been the dominant discourse of the day. Given the circumstances in which the new dispensation has been consolidating itself, this discourse is only being strengthened. It may not be too long before we realise that Smt. Natarajan did not mean anything other than a better opportunity for herself!
