A cheque becomes null and void on the date of the signatory's death.

A cheque issued in an account cannot be paid once the drawer of the cheque is dead and the news is known to the Banker. In this case, bank must have paid it in clearing and later when they came to know immediately debited and reversed the entry.

So you may approach the legal heirs of your father's friend with the unpaid cheque (which the bank must have given you back) or the record of your presenting, receiving the money and reversal and seek the repayment. Good people usually honour the commitment made by the the father if your can convince them that the money was taken by their father from your father, both of whom unfortunately are no more.

Yes, the first option is to approach the legal heirs of the deceased.
