Telephone bills

My father had a fixed line telephone in our home at chennai. he expired on Feb '13 and we had mailed the telephone company to cancel the line. however it was not cancelled and they are now continuously pestering us to pay the outstanding. Kindly help me out of the below queries.

1. Do we really need to pay the bill irrespective of the cancellation as I heard the heirs does not need to pay, the telephone companies would ve insured the connection and it will be paid after the death of custmer?

2. I have sent mail to cancel phone line by Febrauary itself along with supporting documents. We never used the line after that. However they did not cancel and are asking us to pay the outstanding from mar to june. Should i be paying that?

thanks in advance.
