1. While hearing the public litigation interest (PIL) on the protection of mangroves in the state, a division bench of the Bombay High Court on Thursday suggested the state authorities to come up with alternative means to avoid destruction of forests for infrastructure projects. The petitioner, Bombay Environmental Action Group (BEAG), in the PIL has contended that the state is defying court orders by not declaring all land detected under satellite mapping as ""protected forest."" Out of the 5938.1771 hectares of land which was detected as forest land as per mapping, only 2157.3256 hectares have been notified as ""protected forest"" by the state in January 2007. The remaining 3780.8285 hectares, according to the state, have been used for developmental projects.
2. Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana high court VK Jain will participate in the case pertaining to female foeticide and will be part of a two Judge bench with Justice Mahesh Grover.
3. GUJARAT High Court has dismissed a petition filed by lawyer R K Shah, who had pleaded that the Union of India should be directed to invade Pakistan in order to bring an end to terrorism in the country. The petitioner had contended that the terrorism has claimed thousands of lives in India and therefore drastic steps were required to deal with the menace of terrorism. He submitted that to bring terrorism to an end, India should invade Pakistan and destroy terror camps located in Pakistan, which are providing training to terrorists.
4. Justices SR Brahmbhatt, M D Shah and H N Devani have been appointed as judges in the Gujarat High Court. They were already working as additional judges in the High Court. After they were confirmed by the President of India, they were administered oath of office by the Chief Justice Y R Meena on Thursday.
