The Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956

Section 7 describes which Hindu Male is capable of adoption:

The conditions are also described in the Act:

e.g;

If the adoptee is a son, then the adopter should not have a Hindu son or son of a son or son of a son of a son living at that time.

If the adoptee is a daughter, then the adopter should not have a Hindu daughter or daughter of a living at that time.
