ABOUT ALLAPPEY;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
Allappey or Alappuzha in south Kerala derives its name from two Malayalam words Ala which means broad and Puzha which means river. , it has a vast network of lakes, lagoons and fresh water rivers. It is also known as the Venice of the East (a name given by Lord Curzon). It is a pleasure taking a boat ride through its backwaters. It’s popular for the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, apart from the region of Kuttanad, known as the rice bowl of Kerala and its diversifying coir industry.
How to reach Allappey…. By road - It takes nearly one and a half hours on the National Highway from Vyttila (Cochin) to Allappey. Enjoy the three minute ride over the Cochin-Allappey Bridge.
By rail - It takes two hours from Cochin to Allappey railway station.
The backwaters are its main attraction. The snake boat races, which take place in August and September every year, draw visitors from across the globe.
