Shias to get helpline to complain against foeticide
The All India Shia Personal Law Board (AISPLB) has decided to set up a helpline for women to lodge complaints against female foeticide.
“During the recent two-day convention of the AISPLB, a resolution was passed to start a helpline to check female foeticide in the community,” Mirza Mohammad Athar, chairman of the board, told reporters here.
Foeticide is strictly prohibited under Islamic law. “As per the resolution, if any woman is pressured for foeticide by her in-laws or others, she can call the helpline and lodge her complaint,” Athar said. The chairman said that initially efforts would be made to sensitise her family. But if they insist on the foeticide, then they would be socially boycotted.
During the convention, the emphasis was on “meher” (money given by the groom to the bride) at the time of marriage. “Another resolution was passed to check extravagant expenditure during marriage. Community people have been requested to organise mass marriage programmes so that girls of poor families get married with minimal expenditure,” Athar said.
The convention has decided to press the education ministry to incorporate a chapter on Hazrat Imam Hussain in the curriculum as he made the supreme sacrifice for religion and truth. It was also resolved to improve the political and social condition of Shias by creating awareness of their rights and spreading education.
