Jakaat is an entry tax levied by Muncipalities on the goods meant for consumption within the jurisdiction of the Muncipality. The other popular word for Jakaat is "chungi". If the goods are just passing through the muncipality, no jakaat is levied.

Jakaat or chungi has been discontinued by most of the states.

In English equivalent of Jakaat is "Octroi" for for Chungi it is "Escort".  These are levied by local Government  bodies like Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, Cantonment Boards.  Normally Octroi is a major revenue for these bodies.
