Engagement cancelled,need legal advise

Hi Sir,

We and the girl's family went ahead and had the engegement in May.We did not accept even a single rupee or single gift in the form of gold or any other form. But,we had given the girl and her family 25 plus soverigns of gold as gift and as a mark of engagement.

But we soon realised that the girl's family is money minded and they had come to us just for our money;we in our family  beleived that if this would continue and we get married later,it would cause misery and sadness.Hence we called off the engagement and had let the girl 's  family known.

Now I have two questions-Can the girl or her family out of anger or greed go ahead and initiate criminal proceedings at me for calling off the engagement?

Other, they are not willing to give back those 25 soverigns back to us.What can we do to get that back legally?.We have the actual original bill of the jewel that we had bought.

Thanks in advance.

You have no case as you have said that the articles were gifted. The gifted thing is not revocable at the seet will.

Viewing it from another angle, actual original bill of the jewel in token of having purchased the same is a proof of "real purchase by you", but it needs to be proved in the court that the said articles written in the bill were actually passed on to the girl subject to condition that the same will be given back, if the relation does not subsist. It now all depends upon the "principle of morality" with the girl and her family. Try youluck and go into a long drawn judicial battle. But had it been a gift as "admitted by you", I am of the opinion that the gift is never revocable.

It is a contract and it can be terminated, or concluded. I do not think that you will be in danger. Day in and day out, it happens in Indian Society.
