Examination in chief in civil case

I filed a Civil case for compensation for defamation. Plaintiff in Person. On the date when it was put for Cross Examination of me, the judge asked to do Examination in chief. Now since the opponent counsel did not come, the matter was adjourned, I had already filed the Evidence by way of Affidavit mentioning the documents annexed with main petition and Replication in the Affidavit also in PW serial number form. I thought after this Evidence by affidavit, I will be directly cross examined by Opponent, But judge asked for Examination in chief. How examination in chief in this civil case is to be done ? One lawyer told me that it is a 5 minute procedure where I have to label the annexed documents in court file by me as PW serial numbers mentioned in Evidence by Affidavit. Is it correct ?

The defendent to be questioned by the petitioner with the documents on hand, which is called examination in chief.
