The extension has been made on consideration of reports of disturbance in general life caused due to failure of power. That e-filing of returns for individuals earning more than Rs 10 lakh, has been made mandatory, is also one of the reasons for the extension.

The last time this period of time was so long was in 2008-09, when the previous extension was granted. The last time the Income Tax department issued this notice was in 2012. It was also extended once in 2012. The government on Monday extended the deadline before which taxpayers must file their income-tax returns till December 31, 2017.
