Judiciary attacked

Agencies Posted: Jun 30, 2009 at 1825 hrs
New Delhi The BJP demanded the Prime Minister sack the union minister who allegedly tried to influence a Madras High Court judge to grant anticipatory bail to two persons accused in a forgery case.

"It is a serious matter. The Prime Minister should personally examine the matter at his own level and sack the minister after identifying him," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters in New Delhi.

Terming the matter as a "patent criminal contempt of the court", Prasad said swift action was warranted as the matter related to a person sitting on a constitutional post.

In a startling revelation, Madras High Court judge Justice R Reghupathy had revealed on Monday in an open court that a union minister had allegedly sought to influence him.

The CBI had filed a case against a father-son duo for allegedly using the services of a Puducherry University official and a middle man to inflate the marks of the student.

Moily evades the issue

Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily also said that he would look into the allegation made by the Madras High Court Judge.

"I would verify the case. Let me verify the case first then I can comment on it. It is only through media that I came to know that this particular thing has happened. Let me see what has happened," Moily said.

The minister, however, added that Law Ministry should not intervene in all these matters which has to be looked by law officers or by the judiciary.

"Normally we don't react to these matters. What happens in court or what remarks made by High Court judge. These are the matters, which has to be looked by law officers or by the respective judiciary," he said.

Demanding an unconditional apology from the Minister, the Judge told the counsel appearing for the accused "A Union Minister talked to me about the matter. You yourself know every thing. Unless an unconditional apology is tendered by you, I will incorporate every detail in my order".

The judge, however, did not name the Minister.

well said, Can he prove his point. There should be a lawfull way in which a judge (with credible evidence) can seek justice. If not just recomend him to continue with his job or just resign. He who cannot bring justice to himself is unfit to pass judgements for others ...

I still am wondering as to why Rape victims names along with photos flash in media very soon and very often in front pages of some magazines (Like p*rn stories), but media has no clue about who this minister will be.

I guess Madras High Court Judge Justice R Reghupathy is partly afraid/courageous.
