Coordinate with the Bank and keep a vigil regrding presentation of any of the leaf of lost cheque.

Issue instructions to banker to stop payment against the cheque(s) if presented for encashment / transfer and intimate you.

Publish in a local newspaper against mis-use of lost leaves of cheque(s) and file a police complaint..

Report to police regarding lost of cheque and also instruct to bank for 'Stop Payment' of lost cheque so that cheque may be not encased by anyone.

You may notify the bank bout the loss of the cheque leaves and instruct stop payment when presented for payment.

You act at once without delaying any further

No, it doesn't require to maintain balance in the Bank account from where the cheque leaves are stated to have been lost.
