Earlier in India there was a vast land left fallow, uncultivated forset and hilly and so on available in each princely state. The Maharajas whenever they were pleased with the services of a common man, officer or servant in palace and the like used to grant the unoccupied land for such donees. The Grant later come to be known as inam and the grantee of inam was called the Inamdar.
If the grant has any restriction to sell that property to others you should have to get the permission from the competent authority. But you have to specify that property what provision under its granted you.
Please contact local lawyer in this regard

While I agree with Mr.Sanjeev Desai's view, you may also ascertain if there is any restriction/ban to sell the inam/sanad ppty from the local revenue department concerned please.
