(Querist) 23 September 2016 This query is : Resolved
We are cancelling my sister marriage after engagement due to Guy's character(Not a teatotler). They are demanding a Huge expense statment from us on the whole. What are the legal implications of cancelling marriage after engagement
Kumar Doab (Expert) 23 September 2016
Generically speaking;None.

Not being a tea teatotler is not necessary a bad character.

Though Not a teatotler is not a bad character, but my sister wished for a teatotler. So we disclosed the same to them saying we engaged on considering him to be teatotler. Also my sister asked him the same through message for which he did not reply properly. So we cancelled the marriage on saying my sister not like ur sons lifestyle. Now They came back to us asking for the engagement expense made from their end completely(nearing 1.75 lakhs) without bills. We have also booked marriage hall and other engagement expense from our side. But they will not bear those. They want the complete settlement from our end.We are not ok with it. hence want to go legally

Do not bow to their illegal demand. let them initiate the legal proceedings against you. Once the actual action is taken, you may take timely advice. Nothing can be opined merely on assumptions and presumptions.

Nothing. Your sister's marriage stands cancelled that's all. If you come across some nice guy you can fix your sister's marriage with him,

Not a legal query, problem of society and relatives.

Legally there would be no problem in cancelling the marriage.
P. Venu Online (Expert) 24 September 2016
There could be no legal problem. However, a relationship in marriage is not feasible based on assumptions and presumptions.
Sudhir Kumar, Advocate (Expert) 24 September 2016
rather you demand expenses from them because misstatement is from their side.

if you feel non-teetotaler doe snot suit you you have right to reject and such right cannot be questioned.

you have all the rights to conceal the marriage proposal even on the last day if you feel that match is not compatible.

Yes, you can proceed as advised by the expert Sudhir Kumar.
