The governments have fixed stamp duty for different kinds of deeds that are needed to be reduced to writing. It is a revenue to the state exchequer. Therefore, to enforce this requirement, laws like Stamp Act, Registration Act, Evidence Act etc., have been enacted. Unless documents are executed on appropriate stamp paper, the deeds are not valid and have no evidentiary value. Moreover, not executing the deeds in stamp papers value of which are prescribed by law amounts to cheating the government of its revenue, liable for punishment. Therefore, all the deeds need to be executed on stamp papers in accordance with the value prescribed for such a deed.
