I have received an uncrossed cheque from a party. Now what is the effect of crossing or not crossing it by me before depositing in my bank account for collection?

You better cross it so it can be said later on that the cheque was meant for you only and for some one else.

Crossed means to deposit the payment of the cheque directly in the account of the drawee and non-cross can entitle a person to directly get payment from cash counter of the bank.
