Dear Mr. Pandurang,
In Government jobs, the officials are divided into four categories, namely Group A, Group B, Group-C and Group-D.
In Group D - persons working as peons, etc., are covered.
In Group C - persons working as Clerks, head clerks, stenographers, typists, receptionists etc., are covered.
In Group B and A - Officers are covered.
The Officers are appointed through an examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission or State Public Commission. Persons are also appointed by promotion (not direct recruitment) from lower grade to the higher Grade like Group B and Group A.
Group A (Class-I) officers are in the higher positions like Under Secretary and above. The District Magistrates are in Group A.
Group B (Class-II) officers are in the slightly lower positions like - Assistant Engineer, Accounts Officer, Audit Officer etc.
The Group A and Group B officers are called Gazetted Officers. They are eligible to attest any documents.
