How many of us take others phone number without the subscriber's consent? It is not illegal to take other's phone number or home address, unless it is for illegal purpose.

Department of Telecom and the MTNL, a corporation of Telecom Department had been issuing a telephone directory of landlines at regular intervals before introduction of CDMA or Mobile phones. The directory was distributed free of cost to their subscribers and on some nominal cost to any non-subscriber general member of the public. So, you can understand, had obtaining of phone number been violation of privacym the department of Telecom/MTNL would not have issued any such directory to general public.

Your privacy does not lie in your phone number, but your internal personal details. If the bank has your account, that can even ask you to provide telephone number through "Know Your Customer" (KYC) forms.

There is no law enacted in India that one can
not have other's mobile number from third party sources.
