My father is 72 years old who could put his signature earlier on legal documents, But now since he is paralyzed he can't sign and instead prefers to put his thumb impression instead of signature. He would like to use the thumb impression on all legal documents in the future to prepare his will. What is the procedure to get this thumb impression legal as at present we are facing some issue to open a demat account to trade shares where he used his signature earlier about 12 years ago. Please advise on this which would of great help.

1) as per RBI circular for operation of bank accounts thumb impression should be identified by 2 independent witnesses known to bank of which one should be bank official .
2) for will thumb impression can be affixed by your father in presence of 2 witnesses

You can register the will using thumb impression with two witnesses with identification documents and a medical certificate

Thanks Mr. Ajay Sethi for your reply. Can you please advise for operation of bank accounts should the thumb impression identification be done on a stamp paper or just normal paper will serve the purpose.

Thumb impression identification can be got done on the document itself.
For registration of will signatures are not necessary, thumb impression and signatures of some doctors and witness would suffice.
For demat account operation Power of attorney can be entrusted.
