To become a judge of the subordinate judiciary, a written test followed by interview is conducted by the respective state public service commission. Judges of the high court and supreme court can be elevated either from the subordinate judiciary or from direct appointment for advocates who have completed 10 years of standing in the bar.

The examination for subordinate judiciary will be on the subjects of civil procedure code, criminal procedure code, evidence act, contracts, constitution, transfer of property act, Indian penal code etc
