can plaintiff cross examine defendant in civil case??

when court decide by the Merit of document why they need cross examination of defendant???

Veracity of evidence even for documents placed on record has to be checked which is possible by cross examination of the party who placed it on record.

yes. in civil case both parties produce their evidences and the other party has opportunity to cross examine the witnesses of each party. Mere production or filing of document does prove the case as each document also required to be proved in accordance with law. so merely because documents filed by parties does not resolve the controversy unless the same are proved and till then judge cannot give it's verdict.
