Each and every case is different, so there is no hard and fast rule to crass a witness; it depends on the evidence in chief. But there are some simple rules --
1. First you must deny each and every allegation made by the witness.
2. Find out the contradictions with the statement recorded u/s 161 or 164 Cr.P.C with the depositions made by the witness.
3. Point out the contradictions and request the court to record it.
4. Give some suggestions.
/O---
1. Ask him about the contradictions made by the witnesses for confrontation.
2. Ask technical questions about the case diary etc.
MOST IMPORTANT-
CROSS EXAMINATION IS AN ART AND IT IS NOT BOUND BY SOME HARD AND FAST RULS. YOU CAN NOT LEARN THE ART OF CROSS EXAMINATION BY READING SOME BOOKS ONLY. YOU HAVE TO LEARN IT SLOWLY.
