Dear Querist,
Sec.392 of the Indian penal code lays down the punishment for robbery, which includes rigorous imprisonment for a term which may extend to ten years and fine and if robbery is committed on a highway between sunset and sunrise then the punishment may extend to 14 years along with fine.
On the other hand sec.397 talks about use of deadly weapons at the time of committing robbery or dacoity and causes hurt or death to that person the imprisonment for such an act would be not less than 7 years.
Both the sections basically come under the ambit of robbery and dacoity but deal with different facets. Sec.392 states only the repercussions of committing robbery but sec.397 talks about the use of deadly weapons while committing such acts.

Palak
