Hi
Thank you for asking this question
Carrying a knife can be considered as an offence against public tranquillity which is liable to be punished under IPC and the person might be directed to implement a peace bond under CRPC. It also depends on the purpose for which you are carrying a knife. It might be considered both as a dangerous weapon or one of the useful home usages. Other situations also need to be considered. Under Bladed weapons, prohibited arms. are blades which are longer than 9" or wider than 2".
According to the Indian Arms Act 1959 "arms" means articles of any des c r i p tion designed or adapted as weapons for offence or defence, and includes firearms, sharp-edged and other deadly weapons, and parts of, and machinery for manufacturing, arms, but does not include articles designed solely for domestic or agricultural uses such as a lathi or an ordinary walking stick and weapons incapable of being used otherwise than as toys or of being converted into serviceable weapons;
The current scenario for the legality of knives in india is that:
1. It is illegal to carry spring actuated knives
2. It is illegal to carry Button actuated knives
3. It is illegal to carry knoves of more than the specified length(perhaps 9 inches) or breadth( 2 inches).
Hope this will help you
Best regards
