National Conference on 'Provident Fund in Equity Market'

EPFO started investing in the stock market with an initial corpus of around Rs. 5,000 crore through ETFs in the current fiscal which is stated manifold increases as it invest via SBI Nifty Exchange-ETF and SBI Sens*x ETF. The labour ministry has allowed EPFO to invest 5-15% of its incremental corpus in equities through ETFs, which are passive funds with lower expense ratio and lowering the risk of a fund manager. Some of the trade union members of EPFO's board have been opposing the decision to park funds in volatile stock market.

Globally, pension funds have been among the biggest investors in the stock markets, including through ETFs. Even in Indian markets, foreign pension funds including from the US and various European countries, are among the biggest investors and they invest here as Foreign Portfolio Investors.
