Nri marrige

Hello Everybody. I am US citizen. I am going to be married in India next month. My finance and I both are Sikh, and ceremony will be in the Sikh temple. I wanted to know for my wife immigration purposes what should I do. Should I just register the marriage, or I should do court marriage. I will be in India for 28 days. My wife is from Punjab and my parent's lives in Delhi...where should I register my marriage or court marriage? New delhi or Punjab? How long it will take to get a marriage certificate?

Your help will be greatly appericiated.

Thanks

Taranjeet since you are already U.S. citizen you might be aware that USCIS would consider marraiges that are registered during your wife's interview therefore you will have to go for marriage registration. Marriage registration itself is court marriage moreover according to new rule in india all traditional custom marriages performed have to be registered in court. You should register your marriage in punjab since your wife is a native of punjab and you should get your marriage certificate same day itself.

most important in your case is not marriage but long term companionship and it is based on equal share of responsibilities and finances...

you must understand that i am not talking sarcastic but warning you of several frauds happened with nris and financial bunglings have happened as the groom favours a typical middle class indian but later on the marriage is wrecked by financial bungling with her and her family... be careful of financial clarity here because you are not doing any favour by cross checking their financial status and prefer equal status because just in case any mischief of simple argument or incident happens it can lead to dv act or 498a or dowry harassment which will make your life horrible forcing you to leave usa and come to india to fight dowry or possession of assets or to protect your parents here...

i am giving you a warning no marriage registrar or even your parents will give because they are not even aware of these situations...

first things first get financial status clarity by a proven legal advocate...

set clear terms of finances sharing and what you share and what you will get because according to several indian laws she will claim everything of yours into half after the day she is married... you must understand whether you are willing to share half of your hard earned money to a new person who happens to be with you for say few months to few years... more over there is different aspirations and expectations from both families but beware of brides family expectations and get them in writing because they will harass you for one thing or other if they happened to be a culprit family... unnecessarily you will be into trouble with an unknown family...

do not rely even on your parents to cross check their financial as well as their merits which you are marrying... check yourself what exactly you want from her... dont do any pity for yourself... many marriages get divorced only due financial misunderstanding...

best wishes to you for your marriage... registration is not a big deal but marriage once happens beware of all the laws like divorce, dv, 498a, dowry harassment, shared accommodation, alimony, maintenance etc...and hell lot of things you need to know before marriage... beware this could be your biggest financial mistake if things go wrong by grace of devil...

better late than never...

Get a Canadian Green Card for your wife which is valid in USA. Simpler to get that than a US Green Card. I've heard but dunno.

Siks know how to handle wives and women as therwise there would be many beheaded sikh women in India.

Taranjeet: Your wife must be 18 Plus.Registered marriage is required. Inteview in US embassy mandatory. Test of English as a foreign lanaguage mandatory. Wife must stay with you in US for 9 months or more for avoiding phony marriages for obtaining US Ctizenship. At an appropraite tim your wife would have to take the OATH OF ALLEGIANCE to United States of America. Rest of the updated  stuff you'll find on :

https://www.usdoj.gov

Getting into USA ain't all that easy and simple as you may be given to believe.

Good luck with your endevours.
