Air India is a bottomless vessel through which thousands of crores of rupees are being siphoned off. Govt is on record saying that it will not be profitable for at least a decade. Its employees are on blackmail rampage time and again, and we the people of India are helplessly watching draconian hands of govt into our pockets and the money extracted going down the drain.
Admittedly, govt is empowered to make policy decisions but so was the case with use of CNG in Delhi local buses and so many other cases where Judiciary intervened. Why can't anybody file a PIL to stop the govt from pouring any further money into Air India and shut it down or sell it off? Same PIL can also force lending banks to take over the assets of Air India for its failure to repay their loans, and sell them off.
I think it is high time such a PIL is filed. This forum belongs to the lawyers and they only can do it. Pls do it as a service to the nation. Besides, nothing will be lost if PIL is not admitted, but if it is admitted, the person who files it will be star on the national media instantly.
There are several other issues where a PIL is required. For example, our democracy has been restricted to simply choosing one of the few available candidates at the time of voting and thereafter, these elected agents of people DO NOT NEED to check with their principals (the public) whether they really have a mandate to make far reaching policy decisions such as (i) choosing or opposing Nuclear Agreement with USA, (ii) holding or refusing to hold plebiscite in Kashmir (iii) breaking or refusing to break one state into two like Andhra, MP, UP or several other states...... I think PIL must demand that every major policy decision must be ratified by the people through a referendum before Parliament could decide it. And the referendum should be held only with those who are capable of understanding and maknig decisions like at least graduates or at least income tax payees. No point giving authority for spending to a person who is not paying from his own pocket. You can't expect a responsible decision from him unless he himself bears the cost of the decision and not only reaps the benefits.
Our economy is in deep mess and democracy highly fragile. Some good meaning PILs are urgently required.
