Registration of association

Sir, we are in BITS Pilani interested to form an educational association namely 'sports engineering association' at national level in order to have a defined group to promote indigenously sports technology in india sports. Will we have to form it under Societies Registration Act, XXXI of 1860. Will appreciate your suggestion. and also suggest if anyone can help us in the process of registration. thank u in advance
