Reservation of cross examination by Defense?

In a criminal trial of murder, the examination in chief examined the police who submitted the Inquest Report but the defense reserved the cross examination. The point is that can the examination in chief go ahead with his examination of other  remaining witnesses and allow the defense ro cross examined the witness which was reserved?
