Using non-copyright material

I need help about following situation.

I have started a preschool in a rented premises which I got through a real estate agent. Coincidently the premises was vacant for a year and there was a preschool which was running before.

The previous preschool owner while vacating the premises had left the artwork paintings on the walls. When I took the premises painting were in dilapidated state. I got the paintings restored since I wanted to save money than going for the new painting altogether.

Now the previous owner has sent the notice that we are using their painting for our benefit. All the artwork used on the walls are non-copyrighted and are generic in nature which anyone can get from the internet.

How should I respond to the notice? Am I in violation of any rights of the previous owner? Please help.
