How can an nri get a legal heir certifiicate

Hello,

I would like to find out how an NRI can obtain a legal heir certificate. What is the process and what are the documents necessary for submission - this is for chennai, tamil nadu.  Is Indian address proof necessary to get this document? or will a US passport be accepted as identify proof?

thanking you,

Hello Padma,

Since you are a Citizen of India as yet (different than being a NRI), I presume you are not a PIO, then you can apply for Legal Heirship certificate in your home state here by engaging a Local Lawyer.

With respect to the proof, passport or other documents may be required by the Lawyer if he asks. Generally, I think no other docs will be required.

Apologies for the late reply.
