Minister Manas to Pranab: Rollback Excise Duty On Branded Garments
The state’s numerous small scale textile manufacturers and hosiery garment manufacturers can breath a heavy sigh of relief if Manas Bhuniya, the minister for micro and small-scale enterprises, has his way.
Bhuniya has written to the Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee urging him to roll back the 10 per cent excise tax imposed by the Central government on branded textile garments and the manufacture sector. West Bengal has a huge number of small-scale handicrafts, textiles and handloom enterprises, which have been incurring huge losses since this announcement. Earlier, the garment manufacturers in Kolkata had gone on strike against this proposal. A delegation of seven textile and hosiery groups in the state had met Bhuniya and urged him to help them.
“Almost 98% of the hosiery garments in the state is contributed by the small-scale textiles and handloom units which are facing heavy losses. As a result several cottage industries in the state are also facing deep crunch,” said Bhuniya while adding that he will also submit a detailed note to the chief minister in this regard.
