Surname change after marriage

Please help me on this topic - Is it compulsory or legal requirement for a girl  to change her surname after marriage??? For making Passport , pan card &  domicile certificate,  legal document for surname change is mandatory requirment ??? How much time will it take to change the surname legally?? Please advise as soon as possible. I will be thankful to you....
