Advantage is ... no appeal for cases decided under Lok adalat

Disadvantage is ... Most of Mediators try to give disposal rather not discussing about party's needs and queries

Lok Adalat is a medium through which parties can settle pending court cases by mutual consent with the intervention of court. Settlement is possible if both the parties to the court case agree to do so. If there is no agreement of either of the parties, no settlement is possible. The main advantage is that one can settle the cases without lengthy litigation wasting money and time of everyone involved apart from that of the court. Half of the court fee paid can be got refunded in respect of cases settled in the lok adalats. Award passed by the Lok adalat is deemed to be degree the civil court and the same can be executed like any other decree. Further, unless there is allegation of fraud, such award cannot be challenged further.

There is also another provision for the pre-litigation lok adalats acccording to which parties can settle disputes before the cases actually goes to the court. The Legal Service Authorities Act 1987 is the legislation providing for the conduct of Lok Adalats in our country.

Being a alternative dispute settlement mechanism with the consent of parties concerned, one cannot find any major disadvantages in this system.
