Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners are appointed by the President for a term of 5 years.
The term can be cut short on account of resignation or removal by the President on grounds of proved misbehaviour or incapacity on recommendations of Parliament.

The Chief Election Commissioner heads the Election Commission of India, a body constitutionally empowered to conduct free and fair elections to the national and state legislatures.
The President of India appoints the Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners.
They have tenure of six years, or up to the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
They enjoy the same official status and receive salary and perks as available to Judges of the Supreme Court of India.
The Chief Election Commissioner can be removed from office only through impeachment by Parliament.
