The Indian Judiciary is partly a continuation of the British legal system established by the English in the mid-19th century based on a typical hybrid legal system in which customs, precedents and legislative law have validity of law.
Before the arrival of the British in India, India was governed by laws based on The Arthashastra, dating from the 400 BC, and the Manusmriti from 100 AD. In fact there existed two codes of laws one the Hindu code of laws and the other Muslim code of laws. They were influential treatises in India, texts that were considered authoritative legal guidance.
For more guidance you may refer to article appearing at the site of the Bar Council of India at the following link:
http://www.barcouncilofindia.org/about/about-the-legal-profession/legal-education-in-the-united-kingdom/
Manusmriti's central philosophy was tolerance and pluralism. The Judiciary, the Executive, and the Legislature were the same person the King or the Ruler of the Land. But the villages had considerable independence, and had their own panchayat system to resolve disputes among its members.
Only a bigger feud used to be referred to a trans village council. This tradition in India continued beyond the Islamic conquest of India, and through to the Middle Ages. Islamic law "The Sharia" was applied only to the Muslims of the country.
But this tradition, along with Islamic law, was supplanted by the common law when India became part of the British Empire. The history of Modern Judicial System in India starts from that point.

Go to Manali, the only Temple in the World of Manu, the Law Giver to India & the World. U will find ancient Indian legal research there. How many Lawyers go and pray Manu there who gave Law to India? How many know about it? How many believe he is Right even today. It need to dig History of Indian Legal Philosophy and Legal Research. Our Laws are the best in the World, administered in the worst manner, so result is Zero. No Justice.
Like Himalay was named Manali, a spectacular, nice big clean cool temple near Kulu- Manali.
I prayed there First . before staring my Law practice.
He researched, and gave us Hindu Law,
He also said Rights and liability of King, of Pradhan, of Family Law and Property.
The more we deviate from his thinking and philosophy, the more troubled we are, with all these 498a, divorce, and what not.
As rightly suggested by Shri Dhingra, Manu Smrti , and ors throw light on subject.
Our Rule, i.e. ACT, made by Ruler i.e KING
Today;s king in India is Parliament, who make Rules, ACT, the action of a man, regulated by it, and thousands of act, govern your behavior every minute, without your awareness. It all apply to everyone. It is for benefit of all concerned, including ourselves.
After all our laws are man made, hence having defect, error, As no man is prefect, nor his thinking.
Great Lord Macaulay worked for years, researched for Indian Penal Code, still intact with it's 511 sections, but as on today, it also becoming outdated & need changes.
Laws must change with change of time.
