I want to know what is the reasonable notice period in an appointment letter. In a company initially it was one month, subsequently it was modified to six month. again notice period was changed to two months. What is the legal position of a notice period for officer grade.

it generally depends upon terms agreed upon between parties .
what does your appointment letter state?
have you agreed for subsequent modification of the notice period?
if subsequently when modifications were being done and you did not object to change in notice period then new notice period would be binding upon you

It is not governed by any law but by the agreement of parties and can be even a6months/3/months/2months/1month/or any of the short that both employer and employee have at the time of appointment agreed to.

Notice period is completely understanding between employer and employee. Law is silent about this.
