I have often heard and read this term even on LCI--but do not know the meaning--please explain in lay men's language

Writ implies Power of the High Courts and the Supreme Court to give authoritative directions to any Public Authority, or to private persons, to do something or refrain from doing something.

It is extra ordinary constitutional jurisdiction of the high court to enforce the legal or constitutional rights of the citizen of India against the State ir instrumentality of State under Article 226 and 32 of the Constitution of India.

writ is a direction or order to get immediate relief on the rights of the citizen as against govt,public, quasi govt actions. it can be exercised by supreme court and every highcourt.

For layman, writ mean, when ever your rights affected by any one, you can invoke the high court's extrordinary jurisdiction under article 226, and supreme court under article 32. Through writ petitions you can get speedy remedies than other laws..
