Stamp duty is the transactional tax, which plays a key role in the transactions made on a property. It is quite similar to what a government collects for sales tax and income tax. However, when a property is considered, the stamp duty is charged on the present agreement value or market value, whichever is high.

The stamp duty has to be paid fully and on time. Any delay will impose a penalty. Also, make a note that a property document is only valid if the payment for stamp duty has been paid. It also acts a good evidence in the courts, hence it is an important peice of document.

Stamp Duty in rate in west Bengal depends on the are where one’s flat or house is situated along with the present value of the property in the market. If the property is located in Kolkata area, then 6% for property of value less than 25 lakhs and 7% for above 25 lakhs. For notified area, municipality or municipal corporation is 6% for less than 25 lakhs and 7% fpr more than 25 lakhs. For those not falling in the above-mentioned categories, 5% for less than 25 lakhs and 6% for more than 25 lakhs.

You can approach the West Bengal website for the same: https://wbregistration.gov.in/(S(u0zfvylalmjcofruvmy1ilrr))/Stamp_duty.aspx
