The Hon'ble Apex Court has laid out in the case of Ashok Kumar Alias Golu vs Union Of India And Ors on 10 July, 1991, (Read Para 3 and 4) that a life imprisonment sentence essentially means imprisonment for the rest of the life.
Such sentence can be shortened by other provisions for Commutation or Premature release under CRPC or Jail Act or Rules, etc.
Hence, as per law, there is no classification of life imprisonment but only discretionary or other provisions through which the accused might be set free early.

As per law laid down by SC the life imprisonment means for rest of life.
