Guilt-ridden, Bangalore man weds dead lover, runs

Hearing about his lover’s death, Pradeep rushed to her house with a mangalsutra and tied it around her neck. Then he fled.
Police said Pradeep was wanted for abetting the suicide of Vasanthi. Pradeep, 27, had been unwilling to marry her against the wishes of his parents, who demanded dowry to accept the 20- year-old as their daughter-in-law.
Realising that her brothers were unable to raise the dowry, the woman took the extreme step on Sunday afternoon. She hanged herself from a ceiling fan in her house with a dupatta.
Vasanthi, who had lost both her parents five years ago, had been under the care of her brothers, Vijayakumar and Ashok.
Both Pradeep and Vasanthi were neighbours in Chikkabanasawadi, and had been in love for the past couple of years.
Selva, a neighbour, said Pradeep barged into Vasanthi’s house while the body was being taken down, and tied the mangalsutra.
A few months ago, Vasanthi’s elder brother Vijayakumar had asked Pradeep to seek his parents’ permission to take the girl as his bride.
The man’s parents agreed to the alliance, but demanded dowry. Though Vijayakumar hadpromised to pay them the dowry, he was unable to find the money to marry off his sister. However, he was planning to hold both his siblings’ wedding on the same day.
Police said Vasanthi was disturbed over her lover’s silent approval of the dowry demand.
Vijayakumar and Ashok left home on Sunday to explore a marriage proposal for the latter. It was then that Vasanthi committed suicide. Vasanthi’s brothers received her body after a post-mortem examination was conducted at the Dr BR Ambedkar Medical College.
Banaswadi police inspector NB Sakri said a hunt was on for the absconding Pradeep.
